Arts and culture in the Macedon Ranges

‘Art’ is a word synonymous with the rich heritage of the Macedon Ranges. Per capita, our region has more professional artists working in the arts than anywhere else in Victoria.

Public art and formal galleries can be found all across our region, and thriving local theatrical and musical scenes mean festivals and performances are a year-round feature.

There are so many ways to engage with the artistic endeavours of the Macedon Ranges. Wander down one of our many enticing high streets and encounter all kinds of creations lovingly put together by the artists who live or are in-residence here.

Musicians, Hanging Rock

Grab a map and embark on the Macedon Ranges Art Trail or time your visit for November, when you can mingle with local artists in their own spaces as part of the Daylesford Macedon Ranges Open Studios program. We also host the acclaimed Woodend Winter Arts Festival held annually on the Queens Birthday long weekend in June.

Every year the Macedon Ranges Shire Council runs an Arts & Culture program to promote cultural development in the region, covering arts and cultural events, heritage festivals, exhibitions, art projects and all kinds of community happenings.

From exhibitions celebrating historic and decorative glass or Japan’s unique culture to world-class film festivals, plays, choirs, musical and comedy acts, circus performers and everything in between, you will find an event to satisfy your cultural curiosities.

To view the 2017 Macedon Ranges Arts & Culture Program calendar, subscribe to our Arts & Culture eNewsletter or buy tickets to select events, visit the Macedon Ranges Shire Council website.

Piper Street, Kyneton

Piper Street is a wonderfully restored example of past times. It is possible to imagine a dirt track running down the road with horses tied up to the posts and eucalyptus powered gas lamps glowing in the cold mornings.

Today, it is a bustling strip of turn of the century terraces that line the wide boulevard, where you are likely to meet browsers fossicking through luxurious boutiques, edgy galleries up and down the street or hungry guests popping into the Royal George Hotel, La Bonta, Mr Carsisi or Midnight Starling.

Why not pick up some local produce from Piper St Food Company, Duck Duck Goose & Larder or Emelia’s and head to the Mineral Springs for a picnic? Or book into one of the many workshops available – learn about millinery, chair making, make your own charcuterie or learn to draw or paint botanicals.
