Cycle the Federation Trail

Enjoy a 16km gravel ride that loops between Romsey and Lancefield. This route is considered ‘easy’ and ideal for older children as the path largely travels on a dedicated shared path. Combine it with a visit to the monthly Lancefield Farmers’ Market or a cellar door for a great day out.

Set out along the Federation Trail

Begin your morning with a coffee at one of the quaint cafes in the village of Romsey.

You’ll then head out along the Federation Trail that runs parallel to Melbourne-Lancefield Road. The ride mostly travels along a dedicated shared path for cyclists and pedestrians.

As you leave Romsey’s main street, the trail becomes a well-formed granitic sand surface and the surroundings transform from classic Australian architecture to expanses of rolling farmland.

Beautiful deciduous trees line many sections of the path that are stunning in autumn and cool in summer. Stop and pat a cow or two over the fence along the way.

Be laid back in Lancefield

Enjoy lunch in Lancefield and explore its eclectic shops and laid-back rural vibes.

If you time your visit with the Lancefield Farmers Market (fourth Saturday of the month), fill your hamper with treats for a picnic when you return to Lions Park Reserve in Romsey.

Once you load your bikes on the car, you may want to drop into a couple of the wonderful boutique cellar doors in the region. Or take a slight detour on your bike when returning to Romsey and pay a visit to Parkside Winery Estate (open weekends).
