Constructed in 1903 and enlarged in 1917 this dam originally featured the only siphonic spillway in Victoria. Now it is surrounded by scenic farmland and is deep, domestic water storage. Bank fishing only is permitted and the reservoir is stocked annually with brown trout and redfin. The fishing is best when the reservoir is low. Being the uppermost of the three Coliban storages, it is usually the first drawn down in periods of high demand.
Anglers can fish along the shorelines using flies, baits or lures. Please make sure you have your Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence with you and help us protect our fish stocks by observing all fisheries rules and regulations. There are recreational areas with picnic tables, open spaces and walking tracks. Many people visit simply to enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings. The picturesque settings are also perfect for photography and landscape painting, and are popular with birdwatchers. Car parking is provided and dogs are permitted but must remain on a leash.
Camping, off-road driving and swimming is prohibited. All of these activities pose an unacceptable risk to water quality. Open fires are also not permitted. Please keep to the designated walkways and recreational areas to avoid the danger of abandoned mine shafts, steep slopes and cliffs, uneven footing and trees that drop their branches.
Remember to remove all rubbish thoughtfully to prevent polluting our waterways. This will ensure that we all enjoy great fishing for many years to come.
Fishing licences can be purchased at the Kyneton Newsagency in High Street, Malmsbury General Store or at the Woodend Visitor Information Centre. If you are aged between 18 years – 70 years, you will require a fishing licence. Seniors, pension card holders and some traditional owner groups do not require a licence. For further information about LICENCES and OPEN/CLOSED SEASONS, please refer to the Victorian Recreational Fishing Guide 2018 (available at Visitor Information Centres).
When to visit:
Recreational areas are open 8am till dusk all year round. We occasionally close recreational areas for maintenance works and for safety during high wind or heavy rain.
