Journey through wine country | Romsey to Lancefield

Soak up the autumn colours of Lancefield and Romsey villages

Continue along Romsey Road until you reach the historic village of Romsey. In mid-autumn, the centre of town is a blaze of colour from mature Claret Ash trees that line High Street.

Park your car and simply wander its quiet streets, cottage gardens and Romsey Ecotherapy Park, then stop for a coffee and cake at Verdure Cafe.

From Romsey, turn left into Melbourne-Lancefield Road and head into Lancefield alongside the Federation Trail.

You might even want to detour to some of the boutique wineries tucked down hidden backcountry laneways.

Lancefield’s laid-back vibes and picture-perfect mid-18th century architecture make you feel like you’ve gone back in time. This village also puts on a stunning show during the autumn months, with a variety of established deciduous trees lining its streets.

If you time things right, you may get to visit the popular Lancefield Farmers Markets for some fresh local produce, held every fourth Saturday of the month from 9.00am – 1.00pm.

Complete your loop | Newham to Hanging Rock

Country vistas and photo opps

From Lancefield’s High Street, merge into Three Chain Road in the direction of Newham.

This drive takes you through the Cobaw Ranges and farmland and is one that you’ll wish went on forever!

Eventually you’ll make it all the way to Dons Road and turn left. This road is where you get the best views looking out to Hanging Rock. If you’re a keen photographer you’ll find this stretch of road particularly inspiring…

You’ve got a couple of options when you arrive into Newham – either head to Hanging Rock Winery which is open daily from 10.00am – 5.00pm and boasts beaut views to Hanging Rock and delicious wines. They also have a free Art in the Vines event on during the Autumn Festival.

Or if you’re a gin fan, go on an adventure to Big Tree Distillery on Jack’s Springs Farm. Open weekends from 11am – 4pm, Monday 10-3pm or by appointment*. This award-winning artisan distillery is well worth a visit (they also do cheese and tasting plates if you’re peckish).

You might want to complete your trip with a hike at Hanging Rock Reserve and a stop at Hanging Rock Cafe, or take a short drive on towards Woodend village for a stroll through their wonderful shops. Woodend’s picturesque Five Mile Creek is a tranquil walk to stretch the legs.

Note: This loop can also depart from Romsey, Lancefield or Newham.

PS. There are a few suggestions for wine and gin tasting along this route so make sure you’ve got a designated driver!

*Always check with Big Tree Distillery first in case they are closed for a function.
