Kick off with an early morning hike to the top of Camels Hump on Mt Macedon, go on a guided llama trek to Hanging Rock Reserve, then refuel with a pub parma and local craft beer in Woodend.
Start the day early with brekkie or coffee before your hike to the top of Camels Hump.
A volcanic feature formed six million years ago, Camels Hump is the highest peak in the Macedon Ranges at 1011m above sea level. But don’t let that daunt you – it’s still a hike most folk can tackle, although you’ll need to be prepared for a steep 500m ascent to reach the top.
The views looking out to Hanging Rock and the surrounding countryside will be worth the effort!
If you don’t want to climb to the top, there are a couple of other trails departing from Camels Hump Car Park*. The most popular is a circuit loop around Camels Hump to Day’s Picnic Ground that takes around 30-40 minutes each way.
*Camel’s Hump Car Park is located near the start of Cameron Drive, off Mount Macedon Road.
After you’ve warmed up your legs hiking at Camels Hump, it’s time to get up close and personal with a llama.
Hanging Rock Llama Treks offers small group guided walks to Hanging Rock Reserve. You’ll learn about llama handling and have loads of fun interacting with these extremely charismatic animals. Each one has a very unique personality.
Best to be organised though, these guys are so popular you need to book a month or two in advance. Although mid-week is a little easier to get in!
*Pre-bookings are essential.
After all that hiking it’s time for a parma and local craft beer in a country pub.
Head into Woodend where you’ll find a lot of parma-love and amazing craft beer at Holgate Brewhouse and The Victoria Hotel.
Holgate Brewhouse has an amazing Tap Room and state-of-the-art brewery. They are pioneers of the Australian craft brewing scene and if you’re a beer lover, make sure to pay a visit.
The Victoria Hotel has a wonderful kid-friendly menu and a huge range of parma flavours to choose from. Mmm, mmmmm. Make sure to order their locally brewed Rock ‘n’ Ranges beer to go with it.
If you’re a clever duck, you’ll book pre-book accommodation so you can kick on!
As this is a busy time of year, try to make advance reservations at restaurants and cafes to ensure you get a table. Or check out the Autumn Pie and Tart Trail during the 2022 Macedon Ranges Autumn Festival for other ideas on where to refuel.
