Local Craft Beer in Woodend | Loop stop #1

Taste craft beer in our cosy country pubs

Gather the troops and embark on a country pub and watering hole adventure through the Macedon Ranges. Drive backcountry roads ablaze with autumn colours, discover off-the-beaten-track pubs and quench your thirst with a tipple or two. Nominate your designated driver, book accommodation and get ready to taste our region’s very own craft beer and cider, wine and gin in venues bursting with character and history.

The first stop on your backcountry brew loop are two charming country pubs in the heart of Woodend.

Set in a historic hotel, Holgate Brewhouse is family-owned and has been brewing independent craft beer since 1999. Home to some of the best-known craft beers in Australia, Holgate offers classic pub fare and a state-of-the-art taproom boasting 16 taps of limited and special release beer.

A short walk from Holgate is the popular Victoria Hotel. Drop into their Rock and Wombat Bar where you can taste local ‘Rock ‘n’ Ranges’ craft beer – made by a community-owned, democratically-controlled brewing co-op. Don’t forget to try their Wombat Expresso Cocktail. Their pub restaurant has also been voted by Open Table Australia diners as one of the best!

Wine or spirits more your drink of choice? Both pubs showcase tipples from our local cellar and distillery doors so you can get a taste of the region. Their courtyards are also pooch-friendly.

Artisan Gin in Kyneton | Loop Stop #3

Taste small-batch award-winning local gin

By this stage you may have tried our craft beer and local wine. Now is the time to round off your backcountry tasting loop with a tipple of artisan gin.

Animus Distillery is one of the region’s award-winning, small-batch gin distillers. Their bar and cocktail lounge is located in the historic Piper Street Precinct and is a local’s favourite.

Ask for their signature Autumn Festival cocktail or request a gin tasting at the bar.

Tip – why not spend a couple of nights in Kyneton and back up the day’s tasting tour with our Cobaw Ranges Tipple Trail the following day?
