Victoria’s Most Rewarding Autumn Destination

< Back to Blog

Why the Macedon Ranges is Victoria’s most rewarding, quintessential, (and realistic) autumn destination…

With autumn’s arrival in Melbourne and throughout Victoria, there’s a natural temptation to travel far and wide in search of seasonal colour. But just beyond Melbourne’s north-west fringe lies a destination that delivers the full regional Victorian autumn experience—and without the long drive, or the onset of travel planning fatigue.

Welcome to the Macedon Ranges: where vibrant autumn leaves, village charm, food & drink trails, enchanting gardens, and a region-wide festival come together in a delightfully harmonious way that’s as effortless as it is memorable.

Autumn in the Macedon Ranges, less than an hour from Melbourne
Within an hour of Melbourne, you can find yourself immersed in cool-climate landscapes, seasonal produce, and town centre streets and parks lined with autumn colour.
Not to mention the timely added benefit of pairing the short travel distance with charming accommodation properties for those who’d like to drive less and stay longer.

During April 2026, public transport use is also free across Victoria, making the Macedon Ranges even easier to travel to.

There are nine villages with town centres within the Macedon Ranges, generally accessible in under an hour. These include Lancefield, Romsey, Riddells Creek, Gisborne/New Gisborne, Macedon, Mount Macedon, Woodend, Kyneton, and Malmsbury. For families planning school holiday adventures, this means less time in the car—and more time enjoying the moment.
