Mountain Biking | Wombat Forest

Go on a mountain biking adventure

Autumn offers ideal conditions for mountain biking and the perfect excuse to take a journey to the Wombat State Forest.

Located between Woodend and Daylseford, you can reach the Wombat Forest trails by self-driving, or catching the V-Line train to Woodend and cycling to the trailhead.

Alternatively, join ANTT Active for an organised bike tour. You’ll be picked up from Melbourne or the Woodend Train Station, and they even supply bikes and helmets if you don’t have a set of wheels (along with water, spares and a guide so you don’t have to worry about getting lost!).

The Wombat Forest trail offers a fantastic experience for both beginner riders and serious cyclists. It has gained a reputation for being one of the best places in Victoria to ride a mountain bike, with more than 100km of single track just waiting to be discovered.

Hand-built mountain biking trails include the ‘New Wombat Loop’, providing an opportunity to test your skills and fitness in the cool, crisp autumn air. Weave and flow through this fully maintained trail, which has been armoured for year round riding by the local Wombat Mountain Bike Club.

Once you’re here, explore the vast expanse of trails within the forest or nearby trails in the foothills of Macedon Regional Park.

Tip: Keep an eye out for the wombat burrows on either side of the track!

Pub Lunch | Woodend

Enjoy burgers and beer for lunch

All that leg pumping works up an appetite. The nearby town of Woodend has a couple of great country pubs, as well as bakeries and cafes for a hearty lunch.

Both the Victoria Hotel and Holgates Brewery do classic pub fare that you can wash down with a cool beer. Holgates also brew their own beer in their state-of-the-art brewery housed inside a Visitor Discovery Centre connected to the pub.

It’s only a short ride back to the Woodend Train Station, or if you join a bike tour, you can even carry on riding in the afternoon at nearby mountain biking trails in Castlemaine, Harcourt and Bendigo.
