After a wholesome brunch at one of the many amazing cafes in Kyneton, head northwest along country roads that cut through lush green farmland fenced with original dry stone walls.
Your spring sparkling wine trail officially begins near the historic village of Malmsbury, at the warm and friendly family-owned Zig Zag Rd. Wines.
One of the oldest vineyards in the Macedon Ranges, Zig Zag’s rich, volcanic soil combined with hot days and cool nights results in a wonderful Sparkling Shiraz.
The cellar door also offers beautiful views of their vineyard and a super relaxed vibe. Owners Henry and Harriet Churchill even encourage visitors to bring their own makeshift picnic.

Open Thursday to Monday between 11-5pm. Zig Zag is dog friendly for pooches on leads. Highly recommend booking a tasting on weekends.
On the way…
You might want to drop by the Malmsbury Botanic Gardens for a wee stroll. A gaggle of friendly geese will keep you company while you drink in the view of the magnificent bluestone viaduct bridge completed in 1862.
The second cellar door on your sparkling wine trail is another family-owned vineyard, unlike anything you would find in the more ‘well-known’ Victorian wine regions.
Heading back through Kyneton, you’ll drive a further 10 minutes through peaceful farmland to reach the popular Hunter-Gatherer Vintners cellar door.
Owner and winemaker Brian Martin has been making wine in the Macedon Ranges for over 14 years, with specific experience in traditional method sparkling wines.
Brian and his wife Roslyn raise three kids on their farm while growing and making a variety of superb wines, including Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay and Sparkling Shiraz.

Open every weekend Saturday and Sunday between 12-5pm. Grazing platters are also available. The winery is also pooch friendly for dogs on leads. Bookings recommended.
Beautiful, cottage-like spring gardens surround this stunning working farm and winery. While their unique underground cellar door is one-of-a-kind in the region. Here you’ll get to taste some of the best boutique regional sparklings from the Macedon Ranges, as well as Cleveland Estate wines.
After your tasting, order a bottle of your favourite drop and a cheese plate, then sit on the lawn and soak in the serenity of this stunning winery that spans across 100 acres of farmland. The resort even boasts farm animals including alpacas, cattle, sheep, goats, ducks and geese that add to its character and charm.
Their on-site restaurant is open on weekends for wood-fired pizza lunches (bookings essential). In summer, the restaurant opens onto a deck for alfresco dining with views to the vineyard, lake and ranges. It’s even pooch friendly for dogs on leads (outdoor seating area only).

If you’re up for one cheeky final tasting before heading home, drop by Hesket Estate Winery. This award-winning boutique winery specialises in high quality, small-batch wines. Visitors can stroll through their vineyard and experience barrel tastings at their rustic cellar door. There’s even a little cottage on-site if you’ve planned ahead to book.
