ANTT Active – mountain bike trail rides

Wombat mtb Carpark, Taylor Road, Ashbourne VIC, Australia

Test your skills and fitness in the clean, crisp air of the Macedon Ranges. This full day takes in two iconic mountain biking locations with a great lunch at Holgate’s Brewery in between. Get picked up from Melbourne or meet us in Woodend, we will show you around the famous hand-built trails of the Wombat MTB trails and then the Trails around Castlemaine, Harcourt or Bendigo in the afternoon.

Mountain biking is a great sport with benefits to the head, heart and lungs – not to mention the legs! Spending a day in the bush either racing your mates or just taking it easy trying to spot some native wildlife will have you grinning from ear to ear.

The first trail out at the Wombat State Forest has been around since the mid 90’s when mountain biking was just starting up. It is a track perfectly suitable for beginners and a real challenge for more advanced riders when the speed gets turned up. Built by locals, this 17km loop twists its way through the bush following old kangaroo and wombat trails. A popular destination for riders from Melbourne and now one of many trail networks available northwest of Melbourne.

The afternoon destination is chosen from one of three within very close proximity. Castlemaine has a great network of hand built trails to choose from. These are similar to the Wombat trails although more rocky terrain making it a bit more challenging. There are so many trails that all levels are easily catered for. Another location we can visit is Harcourt, home to the new bike park called Lar Larr Ba Gauwa. This is a more modern trail network with predominately more advanced and very advanced trails. There are still many trails that can be tackled with the supplied hardtail mountain bikes but much of this park is generally gnarlier terrain that needs full suspension bikes to make it comfortable. Another place grea for riding mountain bikes is in the gold mining city of Bendigo. The extensive trail network the local club volunteers keep in great condition is located within a short distance of the city. Once again there is something for everyone here from total novices to elite riders. These trails are perfect to ride in the afternoon if you decide to do a two-day trail ride with us. The accommodation we use is in Bendigo which giving you access to restaurants, bars and nightlife. Just don’t forget the 4 hours of riding the following day!

We supply the bikes, helmets, snacks, water and any spares you might need. We also guide you around so you don’t get lost. Riders can bring their own bikes and save $50.
