Background – Campaspe Mill, Kyneton
Campaspe Mill tells a story of industry, adaptation and renewal — and invites visitors to step inside a building that continues to shape Kyneton’s identity 170 years on. Set on the banks of the Campaspe River, just moments from Kyneton’s historic heart, Campaspe Mill is one of the Macedon Ranges’ most compelling heritage landmarks. Constructed during the Victorian gold rush era, Campaspe Mill was part of the infrastructure that helped feed a rapidly growing colony. Surrounded by productive farmland and positioned close to reliable water, the mill played a practical role in transforming locally grown grain into flour for regional communities and beyond. Its solid bluestone walls, quarried nearby, remain a defining feature — both functional and beautiful.

From working mill to cultural landmark
As milling practices changed, Campaspe Mill adapted. Over time, it stepped away from industrial production and took on a variety of rural and storage uses, quietly anchoring the riverside landscape while Kyneton evolved around it. What makes Campaspe Mill special today is not just its survival, but its reinvention. Carefully restored with respect for its original structure and scale, the building retains its dramatic vertical form, historic textures and unmistakable presence — making it one of the town’s most photographed heritage sites.

A new reason to visit
The Mill’s latest chapter sees it reactivated as a place for craft, creativity and regional flavour, with Campaspe Mill Distillery bringing small-batch spirits, onsite spring water, and visitor experiences back into this iconic historic space. It’s a modern expression of an old idea — making things locally, using local resources, in a setting shaped by history.

Open Thursday to Monday, midday til 5pm, Campaspe Mill is a must-see during your next visit to Kyneton. It pairs perfectly with a riverside walk, a wander along nearby Piper Street, or a longer weekend exploring the food, wine and heritage trails of the Macedon Ranges. Whether you’re interested in architecture, local history, artisan spirits, or simply discovering meaningful places, Campaspe Mill is a standout stop when exploring Kyneton and the Macedon Ranges.
