Andrew and Melissa, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins in their first year at school. Andy goes on to excel at Yale and eventually gets elected to the US Senate while Melissa on the other hand flunks out of a series of boarding schools, dabbles in art, has a failed marriage and is estranged from her children. They continue to exchange letters throughout their separate lives with Andy finally realising that whilst physically apart, they have been spiritually as close as only true loves can be.
