15 March - From Church to Pub

Hosted by the Pig & Whistle Hotel, St Patrick’s Day in Trentham East is a celebration deeply rooted in Irish history, faith and country hospitality.

Each year, locals and visitors gather at the historic Sacred Heart Church Trentham East from 11am, before taking part in a traditional community march through town, led by Irish music. Rain, hail or shine, the walk finishes at the Pig & Whistle Hotel, where the celebrations continue throughout the day.

The event reflects the strong Irish influence that shaped Trentham East during the 19th century, when Irish migrants settled in the area during and after the Victorian gold rush. With a climate well suited to farming, particularly potatoes, Irish families helped build the agricultural and social foundations of the town. The Catholic church and local pub became central gathering places, bringing the community together.

Today, the Pig & Whistle Hotel proudly carries this tradition forward, hosting one of the last remaining regional St Patrick’s Day marches in Victoria. The day remains community-led and welcoming, with the pub acting as the natural meeting place once the march concludes.

Following the march, celebrations unfold across the venue. The Pig & Whistle Beer Garden Hosts all-day celebrations, including live Irish music, traditional dancing, family-friendly activities, Irish-inspired food and a well-earned pint of Guinness. Guests can Settle in to the Guinness Bar (Upstairs Dining room) for a more relaxed traditional put feel. While the atmosphere is lively, the focus remains on heritage, connection and genuine country hospitality.

This free event is open to all ages and offers a unique opportunity to experience an authentic regional St Patrick’s Day celebration in the heart of the Macedon Ranges.

The annual march begins at 11am at the Sacred Heart Church, Trentham East. Table bookings are recommended. To book, please call the Pig & Whistle Hotel on (03) 5424 1213.
