Film by Alexander Dovzhenko
Music by Stefan Cassomenos, piano
Melbourne pianist and composer Stefan Cassomenos performs a new live soundtrack to Alexander Dovzhenko’s 1930 silent film Earth, hailed as one of the greatest films of all time. Amid a backdrop of heightened political tension surrounding the process of collectivisation and the ushering in of a new social era, Dovzhenko’s impressionistic response lyrically and poetically depicts the lives of Ukrainian farmers. The film uses the seasonal tilling of the fertile soil as a metaphor for the cycles of life, death and rebirth.
