So what’s the fuss about peonies?
Peonies are the show-offs of the flower world — giant, fluffy blooms in pinks, reds, whites, and coral shades that look incredible from paddock to vase.
They only flower for a few weeks each year, which is why everyone gets a bit excited when they arrive.
They’re also known for symbolising love, happiness, and good fortune — so gifting someone a bunch earns you instant brownie points.
In short: they’re big, beautiful, and make for a memorable day in the Macedon Ranges.
Here’s where to pick your own peonies in the Macedon Ranges:
Peony Open Paddock at Spring Hill
Located just outside Kyneton, Spring Hill Peony Farm is a family-run farm with views of rolling paddocks and gum trees — classic Macedon Ranges countryside.
- A casual bush track walk to get to the flowers (wear comfy shoes – it really is a farm paddock!)
- You choose your stems straight from the colour-packed peony field
- Dog-friendly on leads — so the four-legged family members can enjoy the day too
- The path can be muddy, flooded, or rutted depending on the weather. To access the paddock, guest are required to walk or push a pram or wheelchair along a farm track. For more notes on accessibility, please review the event listing.
You can book a picking ticket that includes a set number of stems, or grab a viewing pass if you’re just there for the fresh air and photos. Bring a bucket or bag to get your flowers home safely.
Romswood Peony Farm — Kerrie
South of Lancefield, Romswood Peony Farm is set within a peaceful valley with beautiful established gardens and more than 35 varieties of peonies, including tree and herbaceous varieties.
- Stunning gardens for strolling before or after you pick
- Smaller sessions
- Farmgate bunches, and plants available for sale (no ticket required for these)
At Romswood, tickets are also needed and picking sessions are capped — so don’t wait too long to book.
Practical peony picking tips
- The season is short! Mid-November through early December — then it’s all over till next year
- Book ahead — both farms sell out quickly
- Dress for the outdoors — wear paddock/garden-friendly shoes, and note spring weather can in reality deliver more than one season in a day
- Support local while you’re here — explore nearby cafés, bakeries, wineries and farm gates
We recommend keeping an eye on any new peony-picking updates via each farm’s social media pages, ie in the event of seasonal changes, etc.
Make it a whole spring day out
Wineries, distilleries and farmgate stops dot the region, making it easy to turn your flower adventure into a memorable spring escape. After picking, explore a any one of nine historic villages like Kyneton, Woodend or Lancefield. Grab lunch, visit a cellar door, browse local shops or weekend markets — and enjoy all things country Vic before heading back to the city.
Even better, plan to stay a few nights and truly immerse yourself in all that spring has to offer across the Macedon Ranges.
