Filmmaker Hannah (Olivia Colman) takes her trans non-binary teenager, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde), to Amsterdam to visit their gay grandfather – lovingly known as “Jimpa” (John Lithgow). When Frances expresses a desire to stay with Jimpa for a year abroad, Hannah is forced to reconsider her parenting beliefs and the stories she has long told about her family.

Jimpa celebrates LGBTQ+ culture, as it is practised across three generations: Grandfather Jim faces the challenges of aging as a gay man in a generation that never expected to grow old; non-binary teenager Frances grapples with disillusionment as their heroes fall short of their ideals; and mother Hannah navigates the differing perspectives of her father and child. Surrounding these three is a vibrant family – the family they were born into and the family they continue to create.

Inspired by her own experiences as part of a queer family, acclaimed filmmaker Sophie Hyde delivers her most personal story yet. Jimpa is an authentic and intimate film, bursting with compassion for each of its characters.

“It earns every emotion and then some, breaking the heart open with such breathtaking truthfulness that you get bowled over just before you land softly in its final frames.” THE WRAP

“Along with its genuine humor and a frank exploration of the different ways queer people live today, Jimpa is an emotional experience that feels authentic in a way that can be difficult to capture.” SCREEN RANT
