Duneira Estate, Officer Lane, Mount Macedon VIC, Australia

Celebrate the start of Autumn in style with a visit to one of Australia’s most notable colonial Hill Stations!

Duneira’s glorious heritage listed gardens will be open for five days over the Easter long weekend.

This remarkable estate was established in 1874 and offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of the wealthy settlers who created extravagant summer retreats on the cool southern slopes of Mount Macedon in colonial times.

This was the era of the plant hunters and collectors and the garden contains some very rare and exotic trees – many of which are listed on the National Trust Significant Tree Register.

Visitors can walk beneath the iconic Dutch Elm Avenue which is considered to be the longest privately owned avenue of deciduous trees in the southern hemisphere. This avenue dissects the southern arboretum and leads to the main residence.

Explore the Secret Garden which is enclosed within magnificent walls of holly. This was the original ‘picking garden’ for the main residence and contains a unique 140 year old weeping cherry , original rock terracing and the first hydraponic glasshouse to be built onsite.

Take a walk around the Carriage Loop Drive to get the best view of the main house from the south, then relax in the courtyard before viewing the fountain lawn and the tennis court.

Wander through the orchards on your way up to see the llamas before heading across to the labyrinth. This feature is the latest addition to the garden and its centrepiece is the recently rediscovered Woolemi Pine, surrounded by masses of Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’.

The estate consists of 38 acres with approximately 16 acres under garden. The remainder is given over to the original production area and contains apple orchards, a Hazelnut Walk, and vast Chestnut Groves which are home to our resident llamas.

Entry to the garden is $12 Adults, $10 Seniors, and Children under 16 years free.

Dogs on leads most welcome!
