Another Vision

Michael Howes’ exhibition, Another Vision, this August in The Gallery’s Focus Room, is one man’s journey from photography to painting.

Michael discovered a love for photography at 10 years old when he was given a Kodak Brownie Starlet. This passion stayed with him through to the digital era.

His subjects changed from focusing on distant and scenic images to those in the foreground. He now focuses largely on the details of objects. In some cases, he uses extreme cropping to create abstracted images. Michael then began his journey into painting.

In 2020 Michael found himself yearning to branch out from photography, for a new creative challenge that allowed both spontaneity and a meditative process. He turned to cold wax medium (mixed with oil paints), and acrylics which are fast drying, but when using cold wax processes, the longer curing time and thicker nature of that medium to each layer gives the artwork depth.

This exhibition also features some of the abstract images Michael has created over the last few years using photography.
