Event ticketing generally needs to be pre-purchased before arrival on event days. Check individual events for more detail.

What time does Hanging Rock open and close?
Hanging Rock’s opening and closing hours vary depending on the time of year as shown below. All visitors must exit the park by the nominated times, so arrive early to get the most from your day visit to Hanging Rock.

Can Hanging Rock Reserve close unexpectedly?
Yes. On Catastrophic Fire Danger days, the reserve closes entirely. You should definitely check the weather and fire danger alerts before travelling.
High winds or Extreme Fire Danger may also close the Summit Walk. Always check conditions before leaving Melbourne so you don’t travel all the way, only to find the situation has changed.

Is Hanging Rock open to the public every day of the year?
Hanging Rock is open most days excluding Christmas Day, and any designated Catastrophic weather event days. Hanging Rock will also close to the general public for the installation of major events, in addition to during major events. On major event days, Hanging Rock will only be accessible to event ticket-holders. In many cases advance purchase of event tickets is required.
Regular major events include the New Year’s Day Races on 1 January, the Hanging Rock Cup on Australia Day 26 January, the Picnic at Hanging Rock Classic Vehicle Show on the second Sunday in February, and the Lost Trades Fair during autumn.

Checking the events calendar, and event advice for entry requirements ahead of time will help you plan the experience you want, and uncover the best day for your travel.

Is it better to visit Hanging Rock later in the day?
Not necessarily. If you opt to enter the park at the time of last entry, you may feel rushed during your visit, and you will still need to pay the same entry fee compared to all day access.

What should I pack for a day out at Hanging Rock?
Bring a picnic rug or chairs, lunch or BBQ supplies, water, walking shoes, hats, sunscreen and fishing gear if you plan to fish (and ensure your fishing license is valid).
Or enjoy coffee, drinks, and meals from the onsite café if you’re hoping to travel light.

How can I get the most from my visit to Hanging Rock?
Walk first, relax later. Start with the Summit Walk while it’s cool and quiet for sweeping views across the region.
Claim your picnic spot. Spread out on the lawns or use a shelter and enjoy a long, relaxed lunch outdoors.
Slow the pace. Explore the base tracks, watch for kangaroos and birdlife, or unwind by the dam.

Where do we get tickets and how do we pay to enter Hanging Rock?
Visiting Hanging Rock Reserve is easy and no advance booking is required for a standard day visit. Drive into the Reserve and pay your vehicle entry fee before leaving. A ticket machine is located at the Meeting Point across from the carpark. Payment is by Visa or Mastercard only (cash is not accepted). Your ticket is scanned at the exit gate when you leave. When major ticketed events are hosted onsite at Hanging Rock, normal public access arrangements do not apply, so always check Visit Macedon Ranges before travelling.

How do we get to the Hanging Rock Summit?
The Summit is reached on foot via the Summit Walking Trail, which starts just beyond the Discovery Centre and Hanging Rock Café. The well-signposted trail follows sealed paths, stairs and natural rock passages through the volcanic landscape to spectacular lookouts. Wear enclosed shoes and allow time to enjoy the journey.

How long does the Summit Walk take?
Allow at least 60–90 minutes return. Many visitors choose to spend longer enjoying the views, unique rock formations, and some time to sit and rest.

Where are the toilets?
Public, accessible toilets and baby change facilities are located a short walk beyond Hanging Rock Café, Discovery Centre and main picnic area. There are no toilets on the Summit.

Can we drive to the Hanging Rock Summit?
No. All visitors access the Summit on foot via the Summit Walking Trail. There is no vehicle access to the Rock or Summit.

Can dogs go up the Hanging Rock Summit?
No. Dogs are NOT permitted on the Summit Walking Trail or anywhere on the Rock, even if they are on a lead or being carried. Dogs are welcome in other designated areas of Hanging Rock Reserve, provided they remain on a leash at all times and the owners clean up after them. This restriction protects sensitive wildlife, Aboriginal cultural heritage and the fragile natural environment.

Is Picnic at Hanging Rock true?
No, although folklore has led many to believe it is true, author Joan Lindsay’s novel is, in fact, a work of fiction. While inspired by the atmosphere of Hanging Rock, the disappearance described in the story never happened.
