Join us for a whole day of four-part shape note singing from The Sacred Harp songbook.

No experience necessary. An introductory singing school will be held at the start of the day. Experienced singers from Melbourne, Kyneton and Sydney will be in attendance.

People of all faiths, and no faith, and singers of all abilities are welcome.

Song books available to loan or purchase. A shared lunch will be provided.

Stay for the whole day or drop in for a long as you like.

About Sacred Harp Singing

Sacred Harp singing is a tradition of community singing that originated in colonial New England, and has been preserved for generations in the deep South of the United States.

The name is derived from The Sacred Harp, a tunebook printed in shape notes first published in 1844. The book is a rich collection of shape note songs from various sources, from the 1770s to the present day.

Australians first gathered to sing from The Sacred Harp in 2001. There is a regular two-hour singing on the first Sunday of every month in Melbourne (Brunswick), as well as a regular singing in Sydney.

This music is loud, participatory, folk hymn singing. There are no rehearsals and no performances. We just gather to sing in friendship for the joy of the music.

Arrive 9.30am for registration. Singing commences from 10am.
