Visit Rowanston for great wines, a chat with the winemaker and a tour of our small winery or just a lazy afternoon tasting wines in the cellar door or garden.
You will find Rowanston on the Track Winery on the famous Burke and Wills Track just north of Kyneton & Lancefield overlooking the scenic McCarg Ranges. Owners John and Marilyn Frederiksen run this small friendly, family winery which specializes in quality cool climate wines.
Our flagship wines are Shiraz and Riesling. The Riesling has a great track record of winning medals and scoring well with wine writers. The Shiraz has won many awards including being chosen by Hong Kong Jockey club as its 25th Anniversary wine. The Merlot is always popular and surprises with its rich but soft plummy fruit flavours.
We make two sparkling wines – a Blanc de Noir from Pinot Noir has a hint of pink in its bubbles with dry with fresh fruit flavours. The sparkling Shiraz/Merlot is rich and full flavoured and a fun drink.
Some years when the weather conditions allow for late long ripening, we have a lovely fresh sweet Sauvignon Blanc. For those who like a fortified we have a great Port.
Rowanston was first settled in the 1860s by Scottish immigrants who named the property Rowanston after the region they came from in Scotland. The Burke and Wills expedition travelled past Rowanston on their ill fated journey.
Life in the wine making industry began in the 1990’s when we planted shiraz grapes at our first property – Metcalfe Valley. Some early successes in winemaking encouraged us to broaden our horizons and in 2003 we purchased Rowanston.
This property is our retirement life, but has flourished in that we now employ winemaker Laura Sparrow to help John with the wine making. Marilyn looks after the viticulture side of things and we share most of the other work. We sell much of our wine locally as well as exporting to several countries. Our venture at Rowanston has become very much ‘a hobby out of control’.
One of our loves is the 200 acres of bush land at the rear of the property fenced off for wildlife to flourish. Whenever we get a chance to walk through this special bush land we are thrilled to see new trees, plants and wildflowers as well as wildlife flourishing.
