Autumn in the Macedon Ranges

Immerse yourself in autumn, Macedon Ranges style.

An autumn Macedon Ranges experience is definitely one for the bucket list.

It’s a photographers paradise. Foodies nirvana. Heaven for nature lovers. Our historic villages, avenues and gardens explode in fire-reds, saffron, golden amber and rich burgundies.

The crisp weather means crackling fires in country pubs and cosy B&Bs. Clear blue skies and cool days make for perfect conditions to go hiking and biking in the fresh mountain air.

The Macedon Ranges in autumn is a truly a feast for the eyes, body and soul.

Popular Spots to Visit During Autumn

Macedon and Mount Macedon are heralded as autumn hot spots and for good reason. High altitudes and historic gardens send visitors into rapture, with intensely vibrant autumn leaves clinging to branches of majestic trees.

One of the most popular locations for ‘autumn leaf immersion’ is Honour Avenue on Mount Macedon, boasting 154 Pin Oaks forming a fairy-like arch of leaves along the road.

So, bring a camera, easel or sketchpad. Wear comfortable shoes. And pack a thermos and picnic blanket. It’s time to celebrate autumn in all its glory!

Here’s a few things you can do around Mount Macedon:

Hidden Gems You Should Visit

Ssssssshhhhh, don’t tell anyone! If you want to discover hidden gems, we suggest heading to these lesser known, yet equally beautiful spots for an autumn country fix in the ranges.

Villages such as Woodend, Romsey and Lancefield also boast stunning avenues and main streets lined with trees ablaze in autumn colour. Plus, there is ample parking, proximity to fantastic cafes and pubs, children’s playgrounds, shopping and more…

Things to Do During Autumn

From hiking to biking, art workshops and wine tasting, cooking classes and more. There is an abundance of things to do during autumn in the Macedon Ranges. Plus don’t forget to check our What’s On page for new events throughout the season!

For Art Lovers

The Macedon Ranges is the art hub of regional Victoria. Watch this video or read below for a few ways to enjoy autumn creatively in the ranges.

Open Artist Studios

Visit artist studios at the Daylesford Macedon Open Studios event held over two weekends on 13 – 14 and 20 – 22 April 2019. This free event offers visitors a rare chance to see how professional artists work, how their studios are set up and to ask how and why painters, sculptors, ceramicists, print makers, photographers and mixed media exponents do what they do.

Art Tours and Gallery Hopping

If you miss this event, consider joining a small group art tour with a local art enthusiast, or go gallery hopping. Kyneton is home to many fantastic galleries where you can easily make a day of it. Download our Art Gallery brochure here.

Art Workshops

Alternatively, tap into your inner creative at one of the many art workshops held in the region. Learn to carve your own wedding rings, make beautiful ceramic bowls, learn mosaics and leadlight window making…the possibilities are endless.

As home to the Lost Trades Fair, Kyneton is particularly well-known for unique workshops in ‘the art of lost trades‘. Throughout autumn (and beyond) you can learn everything from leather belt making, relief carving, travisher toolmaking, silversmithing and spoon carving. Best book quickly though, as spots fill very fast!

For more inspiration read our Art Lovers Guide to Autumn in the Macedon Ranges.

For Food & Wine Lovers

From charismatic wine bars to country pubs, fine dining restaurants to great burger joints, and seriously good brekkie cafes – the Macedon Ranges has it all. Design your own foodies trail. Spend the day or come for a few. Taste local produce on menus direct from sustainably-run micro farms including beef, poultry, eggs, honey, cheese, olives, nuts…even hemp.

Here’s a few ideas of where to go and what to do…

Foodie Heaven

Did you know we have two chef hatted restaurants in Kyneton? Source Dining and Midnight Starling are both located on Piper Street, and are kept in excellent company by other foodies restaurants including The Parkland Kyneton, Colenso and celebrated chef Tansy Good’s new restaurant, Tansy’s.

Country Pubs

Get a beer tasting paddle from independent, family-owned brewery and pub, Holgates in Woodend, with a state-of-the-art brewhouse Visitor Discovery Centre (launching soon). Chow down on gastronomic pub fare at nearby Victoria Hotel (only a short walk from Woodend Train Station). Cool off with a beer at the Mt Macedon Hotel after a walk in the Macedon Regional Park. Or visit the iconic Royal George Hotel on Kyneton’s historic Piper Street for a cheeky craft beer (or two).

Cellar Doors & Gin Distilleries

Did you know we have 27 cellar doors regularly open for wine tasting? And three local artisan gin distilling companies, including Animus gin distillery and bar located right on Kyneton’s Piper Street? Pick up a Wine Trail Map from our Visitor Information Centres in Woodend or Kyneton, or check out some wineries featured on our website.

Love cooking?

Join a cooking class at the Piper St Food Co and learn to make hot cross buns, traditional pork pies, autumn tarts and more. Keep an eye on our What’s On page for classes!

Mountain Gin

Enjoy wine and gin tastings at Mount Towrong vineyard’s cellar door on Mount Macedon.

For Adrenaline Junkies

Go mountain biking in the Wombat State Forest. There is more than 100km of single track just waiting to be discovered. Or if road cycling is more your thing, check out our Ride Guide to the Macedon Ranges. We have sixteen different riding routes you can enjoy, from family friendly to rides for serious cyclists.

Make it simple and book a one or two day mountain biking trail ride adventure, where you have the option of being provided with bikes and being picked up from Melbourne (and the bonus of not getting lost!).

For Garden Lovers

In autumn, the most stunning private gardens open their gates to the public to enjoy, in addition to many heritage gardens open year-round, such as Forest Glade on Mount Macedon, Bringlbit in Sidonia and Ard Choille Heritage Garden in Woodend.

Download our Open Gardens Autumn 2019 brochure for more details on gardens open to the public throughout the Macedon Ranges.

The Macedon Ranges is also home to an abundance of fantastic plant nurseries, such as the Post Office Farm Nursery in Ashbourne and Spring Hill Nursery in Tylden, and the Rodelisa Plant Nursery and Garden Tap Nursery in Kyneton.

Gardens of Tieve Tara

Explore the stunning autumn Gardens of Tieve Tara on Mount Macedon.

For Families

From hiking with llamas, bike rides and bush walks; to picnics, horse carriage rides and fishing, there’s plenty to do this autumn with kids in the Macedon Ranges.

Bush Walking

Give the little ones some exercise and fresh country air with 30km of walking tracks in and around Macedon Regional Park. Or go bush walking in the Black Hill Reserve on the outskirts of Kyneton, where you will discover amazing rock formations. Dogs are welcome too, as long as they are on a leash.

Picnicking and Fishing

Pack a picnic and visit one of the open gardens such as the Gardens of Tieve Tara or Forestglade, or our beautiful botanical gardens in Kyneton or Malmsbury.

Bring your fishing rod and have a crack at catching a fish in the Campaspe River that runs through Kyneton Botanical Gardens. Or try your luck at the Upper Coliban, Lauriston or Malmsbury Reservoirs, which are also dog friendly.

Llama Walks and Horse Carriage Rides

Go on a llama guided walk to the base of Hanging Rock. Or give the kids a taste of the olden days with a horse-drawn ride in a vintage carriage with Yesteryear Today.

Family Biking

There is a fantastic, family-friendly bike track that runs along the Campaspe River in Kyneton’s Botanic Gardens (including an adventure playground). Or pack a picnic lunch at ride a dedicated cyclist and pedestrian path from Romsey to Lancefield (15.9km return), ending with a picnic in Romsey’s Lions Park Reserve. Time your trip with a visit to the Lancefield Farmer’s Markets on the 4th Saturday of the month, where you can grab a coffee and picnic supplies.
