Textile exhibition by Nicci Rossel
This exhibition by Nicci Rossel, Repair and Renewal, explores both the idea of internal psychic repair experienced by the stitcher and the renewal of the discarded/ forgotten or lost cloth/threads that is the basis of the works. In this process Nicci often uses reclaimed/found cloth through old clothing, sheets, tablecloths etc and threads which are often given to her. Nicci has a preference to working with old linens and threads working in a spontaneous flow of stitches. Nicci has been experimenting with rust dye, eco dying with plant materials and a small amount of commercial dye, incorporating the marks of time on the cloth with some form of colour and then stitches.
Nicci’s thoughts on her work include:“For me using old/forgotten cloth and threads creates another level in my stitching as I work with items that have held importance to someone at some point in time. It provides me with a space in which to return to me, gather the threads of my own being. When stitching I am not necessarily thinking, yet (unconsciously) I find internal paths that I meander along while gathering the threads of myself and reworking what needs to be repaired. My work is often unplanned, and I will find direction as I progress and follow these paths.”
