Creating Junk Journals

An immersive workshop involving printmaking, personal image making and a discovery of the role of journals.
Kyneton Town Hall, Mollison Street, Kyneton VIC, Australia

An immersive workshop involving printmaking, personal image making and a discovery of the role of journals.

Young artists will be guided through the art of Gelli Plate printmaking to build a collection of richly personal and vibrant papers, then transforming them into a personal journal for future use.

Phase 1: Exploration

This involves a guided exploration of the art of the Gelli Plate printmaking process using acrylics, precut shapes, textures, fabrics and cut outs and the use of layering to create a never-ending source of opportunities and solutions. Participants immerse themselves in the experience of layering, rolling and hand printing.

Phase 2: Junk Journals

The second phase will take young artists through a basic form of book binding, allowing them to create a takeaway ‘Junk Journal’, a significantly personal journal to be used for future meaning making; a place to form stories, write reflections, develop images and drawings and ultimately reflect on your own perceptions of the world in your own way.

This workshop is designed to allow young artists to learn:

  • Monoprinting skills using found objects, familiar resources and tools, nature, lettering and imagery.
  • Basic book binding skills
  • Visual art elements and principles of colour, line, layering, scale and texture.

Facilitated by artist and art educator Edwina Mintern, each workshop goes for 2.5 hours.
