MOUNT MACEDON

Mount Macedon can be seen from every corner of the region - a place of gardens and spectacular views.

mountmacedonThere are two parts to Mount Macedon which combine to make one unforgettable destination.

The Macedon Regional Park covers much of the surrounding mountain range, part of the Great Dividing Range, and includes Mt Macedon. The Park, managed by Parks Victoria, boasts diverse flora and fauna, with over 400 species of native plants and 200 species of bird recorded. Walking trails link Camels Hump and Mount Towrong with nearby villages.

At the summit of Mount Macedon is the Memorial Cross which commemorates Australia’s fallen from First World War. The Memorial Cross is considered to be Victoria’s most significant war memorial after the Shrine of Remembrance, and incorporates landscaped gardens set in deep bush. The view from the Cross takes in the entire southern plain towards Port Philip Bay. Entry to the Memorial Cross is free.

The Top of the Range Tearooms at the entry to the Cross is an institution for a morning tea, lunch, or quick drink before exploring further.

Picnic grounds and open spaces can be found on Camerons Road leading to the Cross, or follow the signs to Sanitorium Lake, Lions Head Reserve, or Day’s Reserve for some very picturesque picnic and walking trails.

The other part is the beautiful village of Mount Macedon, nestled into the side of the mountain. The boulevard that winds through the township provides a glimpse of grand homes and even grander gardens, many of which are open to the public during the Open Gardens months of April and November. Other gardens like Forest Glade and Tarn House are open year round by appointment.

The experience of wandering through these mature spaces of rare trees, wide lawns, flowering shrubs, and ornamental lakes will take you back to a time when Mount Macedon was the playground for the rich and famous.
