Mount Macedon
Tree-clad Mount Macedon can be seen from every corner of the region. Up
close it is even more impressive; a place of gardens and wild bush, of
natural attractions and serious adventure.
Glimpses of magnificent mansions through huge stone gateways and the wonder of the exotic European plantings that change with every season, to the numerous species of wildlife and birds that inhabit the tall native mountain ash forest wait to greet the visitor. Quaint food stores in the Macedon village, wonderful walking trails over the mountain, rock climbing or contemplation over a glass of wine are all on offer in the natural wonderland of Mount Macedon and surrounds. The true wonder for many visitors is the boulevard that winds its way over the top of Mount Macedon. Many of these estates are open to the public during the Open Gardens months of April and November, while others like Forest Glade and Tarn House are open year round by appointment, taking you back to a time when Mount Macedon was the playground for the rich and famous. At the summit of Mount Macedon is the Memorial Cross which commemorates Australia’s war fallen. The view from the cross takes in the entire southern plain towards Port Philip Bay. It is a view that even locals return to, time and time again. Picnic grounds and open spaces can be found on Cameron Drive leading to the cross, or follow the signs to Sanatorium Lake, Sanatorium Picnic Ground, or Day’s Reserve. Take a break and visit Top of the Range Café and Gallery adjacent to the Memorial Cross Reserve for a hearty meal or cup of coffee. At the centre of the village of Mount Macedon is The Trading Post, a hub for local residents and visitors alike. For the green thumb, two outstanding nurseries thrive in the fresh mountain climate of Mount Macedon. For arts, The Gallery at Mount Macedon is a fantastic new collective gallery that features the work of local artists and craftspeople in pottery, silk, painting and sculpture.
