Kyneton
With a collection of some of the finest bluestone buildings outside of Bendigo and Ballarat, Kyneton has a unique character forged on the wealth of the goldrush. Today, Kyneton is equal parts rural hub, creative hotspot and heritage honeypot.
A visit to the Kyneton Museum on Piper Street will flesh out the living history of the area with machinery displays, period quarters, themed collections and galleries of local heritage, or take a walk through the quiet streets and marvel at the wealth of bluestone buildings and heritage trees. On the second Saturday morning of the month, the Kyneton Farmers Market in St Pauls Park becomes the hub of activity for the town, as patrons stock up on tucker for the larder, then spread out for late breakfasts or long lunches in the cafés, pubs and providores around the town. Piper Street is a wonderfully restored example of past times. Squint your eyes and it is possible to imagine a dirt track running down the road with horses tied up to the posts, blacksmiths belching smoke, and eucalyptus powered gas lamps glowing in the cold mornings. Today, it is a bustling strip of turn of the century terraces that line the wide boulevard leading to the Campaspe Bridge, where you are likely to meet browsers fossicking through luxuriant collections up and down the strip, or hungry guests popping into the awarded Annie Smithers Bistrot or Royal George Hotel (Age Good Food Guide 2007). The Kyneton Botanical Gardens provides an ideal starting point for the Campaspe River Walk which winds its way along the edge of the Campaspe River to the Kyneton Racecourse or Piper Street. As with much of the Macedon Ranges, Kyneton is surrounded by family operated boutique wineries that offer intimate cellar door and dining experiences in evocative pastoral country and granite strewn paddocks.
