WINERIES

The person who pours your wine at the cellar door could be the winemaker themselves.

wineriesThe Macedon Ranges has the coolest grape-growing climate of any wine region on the mainland, with more than 40 vineyards located between 350m and 700m above sea level. Fertile high country soils, deep chill in the winter months, and guaranteed sunshine in summer are the primary ingredients for producing some of the nation’s best table wines.

Made to an agreed style using only Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes grown in the Macedon Ranges, the native “Macedon Sparkling” is becoming the powerhouse of the region, with a national reputation and accolades building the strong local brand.

Every winery is as close as a phone call away if you don’t want to chance your arm with a surprise visit. Food is available at some of the cellar doors, but better still, put a picnic hamper together with local produce and throw a rug down at one of the many natural attractions you will pass on the way to and from the wineries.

The southern wineries around Gisborne, Lancefield and Romsey tend to produce table wines from early ripening varieties like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which also provide the base wines for the excellent local sparkling labels.

The drier, rolling hills of the north around Kyneton, Malmsbury and Baynton produce robust varieties that extend to Riesling, Merlot and full-bodied Shiraz. The rock strewn landscapes in these areas are quintessentially Australian, with dirt roads to many of the cellar doors taking in beautiful pastoral vistas on all sides.
