WINTERFrosty mornings, open fireplaces and big hearty glasses of red wine are signatures of this winter feast for the senses. Snow dustings, crackling fireplaces, wood smoke in the air and the sound of the umpire’s whistle on the weekend – it must be winter in the Macedon Ranges. During winter, light drifts of snow form a white blanket over the landscape, especially in higher parts of the region such as Mt Macedon and the various surrounding hills…even townships like Woodend and Kyneton are sprinkled with delicate snowflakes. And while it is known to get cold outside, the Macedon Ranges is geared to be enjoyed from inside too. Take to a glass of wine and watch the world go past a steamy café window. Rug up and wander through the incredible selection of regional nurseries for inspiration for warmer times. Kick the frost off the grass on crisp and clear mornings while walking through heritage bluestone villages. Visit the farmers markets or harvest open days to see the spread of produce still available in the middle of the cold season, fresh from the field to you. Go and watch a local football match for an insight and appreciation of the local passion and community spirit. The Woodend Winter Arts Festival presents the very best classical and contemporary music, along with literature and visual arts events, in a gorgeous setting. Take a seat at the theatre to see Australian touring performers or do a long lunch before curling up in front of an open fire with a good book.
