European settlement began in South Gisborne circa 1856 and by the 1870's the settlement of Couangalt was established on the corner of Couangalt, Benson and McGeorge Roads. One of the original properties known as 'Couangalt' now operates as a private home and Gisborne Cottage Accommodation. The original barn still stands along with the yards, cow bales and massive cypress pines planted as wind breaks. The original shearers' quarters have been completely upgraded and the garden room added when the new house was built. Late checkouts usually available Parking for large vehicles/trailers/vans.
